Crates full of vinyl records in a record shop

Why vinyl is back, and how to start your record collection

Magnussen Team

In an age of instant streaming, more and more people are rediscovering the ritual of vinyl: choosing a record, placing the needle and listening to an album from start to finish. If you're thinking about starting your own collection, here's where to begin.

Why vinyl?

Vinyl is about more than sound. It's the large-format artwork, the liner notes and the physical act of flipping a record. It invites you to slow down and listen with intention instead of skipping through playlists.

Choosing your first turntable

  • Speed options: most LPs play at 33⅓ RPM, singles at 45 RPM and older records at 78 RPM. A three-speed turntable plays them all.
  • Built-in speakers: an all-in-one record player lets you start listening straight out of the box, with no extra equipment.
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth lets you stream from your phone when you're not spinning records, and an RCA output lets you connect bigger speakers later on.
  • Design: your turntable will sit at the heart of your living room, so choose one you love looking at.

Our Magnussen T1 and T2 combine a vintage-inspired look with three-speed playback, built-in stereo speakers and Bluetooth.

Building your collection

  1. Start with the albums you love. Your first records should be the ones you'll play again and again.
  2. Dig through second-hand shops and markets. You'll find hidden gems at a fraction of the price of new pressings.
  3. Check the condition. Look for records without deep scratches or warping, and sleeves that have protected them well.

Caring for your records

  • Always hold records by the edges and the label.
  • Store them upright, never stacked flat, away from heat and direct sunlight.
  • Use inner sleeves and brush off dust with a carbon-fibre brush before playing.
