Take the party outside: a guide to portable Bluetooth speakers

Picnics, beach days, barbecues, camping trips: good music makes every outdoor plan better. Here's how to choose, and get the most from, a portable Bluetooth speaker.

What to look for

Get better sound outdoors

1. Use a surface. Place the speaker on a table or near a wall or rock: hard surfaces reflect sound and boost the bass.
2. Raise it up. Keeping it off the grass or sand helps the sound travel further.
3. Keep your phone close. Bluetooth works best within about 10 metres, with nothing in between.
4. Charge before you go. A full battery means no interruptions once the party gets going.
